Description:

The community of Las Terrazas, is located in the Sierra del Rosario, province of Artemisa, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1985. You will find a small village of simple houses, which enjoys the beautiful views of the lake from the terraces in the mountains. When you arrive you are surrounded by evergreen forests, rivers and waterfalls with crystal clear water, fresh breezes and birds singing, a rural environment that invites you to enjoy nature tourism.

This is the location of the first coffee settlements in the country in the 19th century founded by Frenchmen who came from Louisiana. Today, after two centuries, there are still vestiges of the Buena Vista, Santa Serafina, La Victoria, San Pedro, Santa Catalina and La Unión coffee plantations, where the high degree of specialization with which they were designed is appreciable.

Without a doubt, the terraces are the ideal place for nature and history lovers, a place that will make you live an unforgettable experience.

Area Values

The Community of the Terraces is located in the Sierra del Rosario, this place has a variety of geological and plant formations and a wide diversity of natural, historical and cultural resources.

The reserve presents a high variety of ecosystems and habitats, which condition its flora and fauna. The diversity of plant formations and the floral richness of the territory, favors the abundance and variety of fauna: birds with 117 species from 30 families of these 12 endemic, reptiles with 33 species and 81.8 endemism, 16 species of amphibians with 81.7 endemism.

The flora has a total of 889 plant organisms, grouped in 608 upper plants and 281 lower plants with 11 endemism, although there are areas that reach up to 34. There is an endemic and monotypic genus of pine trees: Phyllomelia (Rubiacea), only documented worldwide for Cajálbana and Sierra del Rosario.
