Description

La Gran Piedra, treasure of eastern Cuba. Gigantic mass of stone, witness of the Paleogene volcanism, as well as all the geology of the Sierra Maestra where strata of this type of rocks are present, composed of tuff, ash and other fragments of rocks and liquid products, such as mantles of volcanic lava.

It is located at 1 225 meters above sea level, which makes it a natural viewpoint, to the point that locals claim to see from it, on clear nights, the glow of lights indicating the proximity of the Republic of Haiti. This place offers views of high contrasts. On one side you can see the entire southeastern coastline, where the beaches and picturesque hotels of the Baconao Park extend, and in another direction you can see the city of Santiago de Cuba, with its 18-story buildings defying the seismicity of the terrain, and the stony ruins of stately mansions and coffee dryers that signify the Franco-Haitian footprint in these hills.

Baconao Park. National Park in Cuba that covers a wide region located approximately 20 kilometers from the city of Santiago de Cuba, its total area is 84,600 hectares. In 1987, it was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It is one of the most visited tourist destinations by national and foreign hikers. It owns a diversity of attractions, from the Prado de las Esculturas, the Valley of Prehistory and the Dolphinarium, it also has beaches with very warm waters from the Caribbean Sea.
