“Visit to the Canyon of the Yumurí River” Tour

Description

The Yumurí River Canyon is the most biodiverse and endemic canyon on the island. It is 220 meters deep, has walls about 200 meters high and extends inland for about 4 kilometers. The beauty of the environment that surrounds the green place attracts visitors and locals, it occupies an area of 8.7 square kilometers of forest (it traces the boundaries between the municipalities of Baracoa and Maisí, in the northeast), in which there are many birds and amphibians.

During the journey to reach our destination we will cross the town of El Jamal, the largest producer of cocoa in the municipality of Baracoa, we will stop at the house of the farmer Zoila, where you can taste some of the products that can be obtained by hand from cocoa and coffee. We continue the tour, during which you will also be able to appreciate some impressive views of long black sand beaches, such as Manglito and we will cross an immense stone that falls on the road forming a natural tunnel known as Paso de los Alemanes, totally covered by epiphytes and curujeyes plants.

The town of Yumurí is 28 km from the city of Baracoa. Upon arrival, we will take a 450-meter walk to the natural lookout point where you will be able to appreciate beautiful views that go from the depths of the Yumurí River canyon to the picturesque landscape and the fishing village.

Returning to the fishermen's village, if you wish, you can take a cayuca (a traditional boat from Baracoa) and visit a key located in the center of the canyon. You will also be able to learn a little about the history of this place and its link with banana production at the beginning of the 20th century.

Returning from our excursion you can visit, for a stay and swimming time on the beach, the Bay of Mata, a place with a settlement of fishermen with a fabulous view of the bay and possibilities of swimming in its calm waters.
