Description

Ciénaga de Zapata National Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve and RAMSAR Site by UNESCO in 2000. It is an important bird watching area, besides being the largest and best preserved wetland in Cuba, and one of the largest in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Bermejas Fauna Refuge is located in the eastern zone of the Managed Resources Protected Area and the Zapata Peninsula Biosphere Reserve, north of the town of Bermejas. This area is home to endemic species such as the Heterosavia laurifoliayjicarita (Casasia calophylla). There is also a predominance of the soplillo (Lysiloma latisiliqua), júcaro (Bucida sp.) and palms (Sabal sp. and Roystonea regia).

Program:

• Pick up at the hotel.
• Transfer to the Zapata Swamp area.
• Visit to the Bermejas Trail where you will be able to observe birds and plant formations. It is done with little difficulty, being done on foot and using some abandoned forest roads, by vehicle. You can arrive from the Bermeja road to the entrance of the trail where you will be guided by personnel specialized in bird watching in the National Park. The trail crosses an area of semi-deciduous forests that remain semi-flooded during the rainy season. On the way you can see up to 21 species of the 27 endemic species of Cuba such as pigeons, parrots, woodpeckers, sijues, cateyes and zunzuncito, the smallest bird in the world.
